Project Cargo Management & Coordination

Real Success Story: Complex Machinery Relocation

A client approached us regarding a sophisticated industrial machine they had acquired through auction for shipment from the UK to India. The project presented considerable logistical challenges that had deterred other providers. The machinery had been dismantled prior to our involvement, with no available weighing facilities on site, requiring comprehensive assessment to determine transportation requirements. During our detailed site evaluation, we discovered that multiple logistics companies had declined to proceed with quotations after their initial assessments.

Where others identified insurmountable obstacles, we recognised an opportunity to demonstrate our problem solving capabilities. Through meticulous planning and strategic coordination with specialist partners, we successfully filled six HQ containers and engineered a custom crating solution for the primary component, achieving a secure 5 metre high configuration on a flat rack trailer (as seen above). This comprehensive project coordination resulted in the successful delivery to India, which required both technical excellence and cultural intelligence, illustrating our capability to transform complex challenges into seamless solutions.

What is the difference between project cargo and out of gauge cargo?

Out of gauge cargo is any single piece too long, wide or tall for a standard container, so it travels on a flat rack or open top. Project cargo is the whole move: several shipments, specialist equipment, permits and site deadlines, all planned as one. At SARR, we manage both, from one awkward crate to a full factory relocation.

Should my oversized cargo travel on a flat rack, an open top or a breakbulk vessel?

It depends on the dimensions. An open top suits cargo that is too tall but fits the container width. A flat rack takes out of gauge cargo that is too wide or awkwardly shaped. Breakbulk is for pieces too large or heavy for any container. Send us the dimensions and weight, and we will recommend the most cost effective option.

How far in advance should I book a project cargo shipment?

Earlier than you would book a container. Heavy lift vessel space, specialist trailers and permits all carry lead times, and specialist capacity is tight in 2026. Speak to us as soon as your dimensions are confirmed. That gives us time to survey the route, secure the right equipment and protect your delivery date.

Do I need a permit to move an abnormal load by road in the UK?

Usually, yes. A load over standard weight, width or length limits is classed as an abnormal indivisible load. The haulier must notify the police, highway and bridge authorities before it moves, and the largest loads need a Special Order from National Highways. We arrange all of this for you, so your load moves legally and on time.

How does SARR use the JC Project network for overseas project cargo?

As a member of the JC Project network, we work with vetted project cargo specialists in the country your cargo is heading to. They handle local cranes, permits and final delivery. Our WCA membership adds further trusted agents worldwide. You get one point of contact at SARR, with experienced partners on the ground at both ends.
